This was my first trip to the Yellow Aster Butte area as a freshman at WWU. It was also the first time I really connected with a place. I could easily spend a month in this basin and in the surrounding peaks. While living in Bellingham, I made it a point to come back here at least once every year.
Fun fact: Water from the foreground and left of this ridge drains south into the Nooksack river. Water to the right of the ridge (center right in photo) drains north, flowing into Canada and the Chiliwack River, and then into the Fraser.

We hiked up to our camping spot atop Winchester in the dark. It was my first trip there and I didn’t know what to expect… well. To this day, I think this is the most spectacular sunrise view I’ve witnessed.
We’re mostly looking into Canada here. The peak in the center is Mt. Slesse, which is famous for climbing and dangerous icefall.
